Dear Families and Friends,

Welcome to the Week 6 Newsletter. It is hard to believe that we are halfway through our first term of the school year, it is certainly flying by. Recently, I have had many students from across the school visit me in my office to showcase some of the learning they have been doing in class. I have been particularly impressed with the quality of the Narrative writing that many of our students are producing. The students are using interesting and varied vocabulary which makes their stories a pleasure to read. Congratulations to those students for their exceptional writing and I thank them for sharing their learning with me.

NAPLAN Online

Our Year 3 and 5 students will begin their NAPLAN assessments next week. The testing period is open between Wednesday 15 March and Monday 27 March. A timetable of scheduled testing times for each class has been posted to class dojo.  All of the Year 5 assessments will be online, Year 3 Reading, Language Conventions and Numeracy will be online, Writing will continue to be a paper test again this year. If your child is absent on an allocated testing day, Catch-Up tests will be administered throughout the testing period. Good luck to all of our Year 3 and 5 students.

BPS School Board

The Byford Primary School, School Board has two vacant parent position to fill this year. The School Board is comprised of the School’s Principal, School Staff, and up to 10 elected Parent and Community representatives. The Parent, Community and Staff Representatives hold office for a period of two years from the time of their election. The role of the School Board is one of setting the long term future for the school and maintain oversight (not management) of the school’s operation. It is about providing additional expertise to help the school achieve the best outcomes for the students. Unfortunately, we did not receive any nominations for these positions in our last nomination round. If this is something that you may be interested in, then please keep your eye out on class dojo and the facebook page for information on how to nominate, or come in and see me if you would like to know more about the position.

BSSA Summer Carnival

Good luck to selected Year 5 and 6 students who made the Basketball, Cricket and T-Ball teams for the interschool Summer Carnival this Friday. We hope you enjoy the day and we know you will make us all proud by showing the Byford Way in competition. Thankyou to Mrs Diedrichson, Mr G, Mr Way and Ms Winmar for training the students and accompanying them on the excursion.

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is being held this year from 20 – 26 March (Week 8). Harmony week celebrates and recognises our diversity, it is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. During week eight of the term, students will be participating in class activities to celebrate Harmony Week. We invite all students and staff to wear orange (the colour worn to show your support of harmony day) or cultural dress on Friday 24th March.

Room 2 have been reading "Willy the Wimp" by Anthony Browne. We talked about words to describe Willy and how to put these into a sentence. We wrote fantastic descriptive sentences and drew amazing illustrations.

Introducing the fabulous students in Room 8...

To start the year off, we have talked a lot about being reflective learners and goal setting. Each week, we complete a reflective journal, to think about our best lessons and work from the week and things we can improve on. We then set achievable goals and look back on previous weeks to see if we can tick off goals.

One of our first activities, was to create portraits of ourselves showing some goals we would like to achieve this year. We did an amazing job and are proud of our efforts.

We hope you enjoy looking at our artistic talents and reading what we would like to achieve.

We enjoyed a fantastic day on Friday 3rd of March as we joined in Clean Up Australia Day and helped to clean up our community. Our classes spread out to clean up areas around our school, along Clifton Street, up and down Mary Street, including St Aidan’s church grounds, as well as into the creek and areas of land on South Crescent and Park Road Community Kindy.

We would like to say a big THANK YOU to those who donated gloves and bags to help with the clean-up.  Well done to everyone involved!! We collected many bags of rubbish which will help raise money for our local shire.

Congratulations and well done to all

students who received Merit Awards.

Keep up the great work!

Hi everyone, I hope that you are in good spirits.  Here is a quick joke. “Why did the thief keep his word?” Ans: “Because no one would take it.”

There are over 170 00 words in the English/Australian language. On average, a person will use a range of about 500 to 800 different words in a day. Some statistics say that a person, on average, speaks a total of 7000 words in a day, which varies according to their personality, job, etc. We live in a world of many words.

However, people seem to be confused and at times are not sure what to think about what a person has said. Are they telling the truth? Have they left out important information? Do I need to read between the lines?

There are 2 Golden Rules we should live by.

“Treat others as you would want them to treat you.” is the first golden rule. If you want friends, be a friend. If you want understanding, be understanding. If you want kindness, be kind. If you want help, help others. If you want honesty, be honest.

The second golden rule is, “Say what you mean and mean what you say.”

Food for thought. Have a wonderful week.

Joe Grida - School Chaplain

Hat_Sun.png

A ‘No Hat, Limited Outside Play’ policy is enforced at Byford Primary School all year.  Parents can assist us by reinforcing the need for protection from the sun by ensuring that students have a wide brim hat. Hats can be purchased through the school uniform shop next to Room 3.  Students who do not have a hat are instructed to play under sheltered areas such as the Undercover Area near the canteen. Caps are not acceptable as they do not provide adequate protection to the ears and back of the neck from the sun.
